WHO SITS LONGER, LIVES SHORTER.

Back trouble is a widespread problem in Germany.
Particularly office workers suffer from the sitting for hours.
Human beings aren’t made for long sitting, day and night.
70% of the German working people complain about back pan. Back problems and musculoskeletal disorders are accountable for the bulk of medical leave in Germany.
The evidences of the causality between long sitting and serious physical problems are gaining more and more weight.

Office workers spend approximately 80.000 hours of their professional life sitting – with upward tendency.
On average, every adult spends 11.5 hours per day sitting.
Even primary students sit for 9 hours a day.
While you’re reading this text, you’re probably sitting as well, right?
When did you lately stand up for a short moment or made a few steps?
For how long have you moved around?
If one believes the studies concerning this matter, probably not enough.
Due to digitalization and the change in office work, we now sit far more than only 20 years ago.

GET ON BOARD.

If one follows work science results, one can work at a monitor-based workplace without any problem. For example, there are ergonomic office chairs that height- and position- adjustable.
In accordance with present findings however, it is not the incorrect, uncomfortable or crooked position, but rather the long – still – sitting which causes the problems.

Who hasn’t yet heard the saying: “Only a hard chair is a good chair.”
Why is that true?
It is true because one moves around on this uncomfortable chair and changes constantly one’s posture.
Hanging on the sofa, comfortable without moving for hours – this is bad. Still – thus nearly motionless – sitting is very bad. It leads to the degeneration of abdominal and back muscles. Moreover, due to the constant pressure, the intervertebral disks get thinner.
How can one solve this problem?
Option one would be, as mentioned above, to get a hard chair. Yet, it is uncomfortable and distracts.

“Stand up for what you believe in. Even if that means standing alone.”

STANDING STAMINA

Option two: alternate standing and sitting.
However, this isn’t totally unproblematic neither:
Firstly, constant standing is even less comfortable than sitting on a hard chair. After one or two hours already, muscles start to be strained.
Additionally, one loses the “flow”, thus the periods of concentrated working. During the “flow”, we are not only highly productive but also get happy.
Because standing, one is focused but not as oblivious of everything around as one is sitting in a wing chair having one’s feet on the table.

Moreover, it is not proven at all that standing is healthier than sitting.
On the contrary.
Biomechanics of the University of Ulm found out recently that the spinal strain standing is similarly high while sitting.
Which is logic in kind a way.
Thus, decisive is the permanent change of posture and the regular physical activity during office work.

SCHILLER CAN’T BE WRONG

Already Napoleon, Goethe, Schiller and Hemingway once praised the standing desk as a workplace.
Still, over the years, this traditional writing and reading aid was replaced by normal desks and chairs.
Now, the standing desks are a fixed component of the furniture manufacturer’s portfolio and in 2007 the first school – the high school in Neumark (Vogtland) – introduced them by default.
The reason for this renaissance of standing desks is the dramatical increase of back complaints which by now cause 30 percent of all sick notes.

But what should be done when there is no standing desk, when the office desk has no motor and when the company thinks of standing desks as unnecessary?
Then, we can help.
